In one excruciatingly long scene, she devours most of a pie bought by a friend, sitting on the floor of the kitchen. The ghost watches, unable to act or communicate, "faraway so close". It is a scene both sad and beautiful but the duration takes it towards comedy – and that is a danger here. Most directors do not write poetry with images; they write prose. Logic, order and grammar in movies parallel those same things in literature, so when we are confronted by someone who does not write prose, the effect can be challenging or even enraging. This scene with the pie marks the point of no return for Lowery. If you go with him into the grief and the loneliness, he will deliver something elegiac, poetic and emotional. If you do not, he is the man from pseud's corner, playing with the camera like a child. This is partly deliberate. The device of using a man under a sheet to evoke a ghost is the simplest, cheapest, low- tech special effect known to man and boy. He asks us to swallow it because it is a funny way to get to the idea of what we leave behind – and whether anything lasts. If you want to bother, the film has a lot of ideas about this. Do works of art, like music, endure? He weaves in Beethoven's Ode to Joy, suggesting they do. Does love endure after we die? In a sense we all hope for that, even if we think it is a lie. Sound is as important here as the haunting visuals (pun intended) – both the pulsing enigmatic soundtrack by Daniel Hart and the intricate sound design by Johnny Marshall. Sound has always been more important in horror and this is a sort of horror film, albeit creepy rather than scary. The horror is existential, intellectual. Making a thinking person's horror movie is controversial. Some will say that intellect has no place in horror, at least for the viewer, but that is debatable. The best horror is both thoughtful and pungent. Whatever we call it, A Ghost Story is out there, waiting for the braver viewers.
